Grooming Future Chief Nursing Officers

CNO Title Photo The CNO Development Program is a great opportunity for nurses looking to expand their careers by assuming the role of Chief Nursing Officer. The CNO Development Program accepts the brightest aspiring Charge Nurses, Nurse Managers, Nurse Supervisors, and Nurse Directors from HCA-affiliate hospitals. As Associate CNOs, these exceptional nurses will develop leadership, business management, and other skills necessary to advance to a CNO role in the organization.

Associate CNOs direct nursing activities at assigned hospitals that correspond with defined hospital policies and objectives. They also participate fully in an executive mentorship with a facility CNO on formal development opportunities, and they may complete training modules with rotations through multidisciplinary departments such as the Business Office, Health Information Management and Shared and Centralized Services.

In the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Associate CNO represents the CNO and assumes responsibility for the entire scope of the CNO’s responsibilities. While in the CNO Development program, the Associate CNO is a transitory member of the Executive Leadership Team.

General Responsibilities of the Associate CNO

  • Complete an executive assessment tool prior to starting the program as a guide for goals and executive development.
  • Complete facility-training assignments and scheduled training seminars at HCA.
  • Provide administrative support for assigned functions of the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • The ACNO and CNO mentor must ensure all assigned work and assignments have a developmental component to it.
  • Drive hospital business towards enhanced product or service quality.
  • Build strategic alliances and partnerships within the organization to collaboratively execute business strategies.
  • Effectively incorporate customer perspectives in all business activities.
